Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic injuries and conditions can significantly affect your pet's mobility and quality of life. At Coble Animal Hospital, we provide orthopedic surgical care to help pets recover from joint, ligament, and bone-related issues so they can get back to moving comfortably. Our team uses thorough diagnostic evaluation to determine the best treatment approach for your pet's specific condition, size, age, and activity level.

CCL Injuries and Repair

One of the most common orthopedic issues we treat is a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injury, which can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty bearing weight on the affected leg. We perform MMP to help restore joint stability and support long-term mobility. Other orthopedic conditions we evaluate and treat may include luxating patella, hip dysplasia, and certain bone fractures, with treatment plans tailored to each pet's needs.

Fractures & Dislocations

Fractures and dislocations are serious orthopedic injuries that require prompt attention. Whether caused by trauma, a fall, or an accident, these conditions can be extremely painful and may worsen without timely treatment. Our team evaluates the extent of the injury through diagnostic imaging and recommends the most appropriate surgical approach to stabilize the affected bone or joint, relieve pain, and support proper healing. Every case is different, and we tailor our treatment plan to your pet's specific injury, age, and overall health.

FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy)

Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) is a surgical procedure used to relieve pain caused by severe hip joint damage or disease. During the procedure, the femoral head, the ball portion of the hip joint, is removed, allowing the surrounding muscles to act as a functional replacement for the joint. This eliminates the painful bone-on-bone contact that causes discomfort and limited mobility. FHO is a well-established option for pets with hip dysplasia, fractures of the femoral head or neck, or other conditions affecting the hip joint that cannot be managed with medication alone. Recovery involves physical activity and rehabilitation to help your pet build muscle strength and regain comfortable movement.

Amputation

Amputation is a surgical procedure in which a limb or digit is removed to relieve pain, prevent the spread of disease, or address a severe injury that cannot be treated through other means. While the idea of amputation can be difficult to consider, it is often the most humane option for pets dealing with advanced bone cancer, severe trauma, untreatable infections, or conditions that significantly impact quality of life. Most pets adapt remarkably well after amputation and are able to move, play, and enjoy a good quality of life with three limbs. Our team will thoroughly evaluate your pet's condition and discuss all available options with you before recommending this procedure.

What to Expect

Before recommending surgery, our team performs a complete surgical evaluation and diagnostic imaging to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes of lameness or discomfort. We'll walk you through the recommended procedure, what recovery looks like, and how to support your pet's healing at home. Our goal is to help your pet regain comfortable movement with a plan suited to their specific condition.
